Telecommunications of Orange County
TOC or Telecommunications of Orange County is a consortium
of member schools who have joined together to purchase full rights
for video based instructional television programming created specifically
for classroom teaching.
TOC broadcasts 3½ hours of high quality instructional
television programs from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday throughout the school year. This allows teachers to tape a
variety of special series and programs off-air. TOC programs are broadcast
on PBS station KOCE-TV for teachers who have access to cable television
either at home or at school. Most cable companies in Southern California
carry KOCE on their systems. TOC also schedules a variety of live
and interactive programs that offer students and teachers the opportunity
to participate in "real-time" events.
Free Staff Development
TOC member schools receive free in-service training to guide teachers
in the development of effective integration of technology in the classroom.
A variety of different seminars and staff development workshops are
available. Workshops can also be designed to meet a particular school's
objectives and can range in length according to the school's schedule
and availability.
Monthly Bulletins and Newsletters
Each month, TOC members schools are sent an updated broadcast schedule,
listings of other educational programs available for off-air recording, special event announcements and other information for technology using educators.
Membership Fees
The cost to schools to become a full member of TOC is $1.03 per
student per year. The cost is less if an entire district joins. This
fee covers all of the above mentioned benefits and truly is a cost
effective way for schools to build a rich instructional media collection.
Purchasing just video series from a distributor usually costs several
hundred dollars. It costs less than $600 for an average size elementary
school to join TOC. This includes access to hundreds of programs,
support materials and teacher training. A TOC membership is a worthwhile
investment in the education of all children.
