Fact Sheet

DTV represents the fusion of video, audio, images and text into an entirely new medium.
  • Today, new technologies are paving the way for a "one-screen" converged media experience! Where TV and online content will be seamlessly integrated and viewers and users will be able to tailor and control their experiences like never before.

  • In a digital world, your television picture and sound at home will rival anything seen and heard in movie theaters today. You'll think you're really on the space shuttle or riding an elephant on an African safari. With Digital TV, there'll be virtual reality right in your own home.

  • Picture a time when KOCE can - on any given day - show a whole curriculum of college-credit and professional development telecourses - from plant biology to marketing communication - putting lifelong learning within reach of every adult who watches KOCE.

  • Imagine that at the moment, KOCE can broadcast an outstanding lineup of programs for young children - helping them develop academic social skills for success in the classroom.
DTV is the most significant change in television since the medium was invented. It is a federally mandated upgrade in technology-one that
will forever change the way that pictures, sound and data are delivered to homes, classrooms and businesses.
  • Think about the many ways that KOCE can reach out to the community with television programs that stimulate discussions about key social issues. A recent example of this kind of community outreach took place when KOCE screened the national program, "On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying in America" to a large group of residents. After the program was shown, local professionals from the medical, religious and human services communities led small groups in thought-provoking discussions about death and dying.

  • And, suppose at the same moment, KOCE could provide coverage of state and local government, town hall meetings and school board debates.

  • And, what if KOCE could still, at the same time, offer television viewers a mix of commercial-free entertainment and comedy.

All of this is possible in a digital world when we will be able to maximize the power of this new media in ways that improve the quality of life and learning for everyone.
