In Loving Memory of Jo Caines

I am sad to report to you the passing of Jo Caines, KOCE-TV's former Director of Community/Government Relations & Outreach. Jo passed away on Saturday January 3rd. She worked for KOCE until she was in her seventies, retiring just a few years ago. For twenty years, from 1981 to 2001, Jo was KOCE-TV's stellar and visible ambassador to the community. She was an important part of KOCE's outreach to many Orange County groups, meeting regularly with local leaders to address their issues and helping them through the broadcast reach of KOCE public television. Jo was among the most admired women in Orange County for her many achievements at KOCE and in the community. In her career at KOCE, she received honors both locally and nationally as the recipient of more than 60 awards, including the "Jo Caines Expanding Minds Award" given by KOCE to outstanding community leaders. At a time when KOCE was producing few local programs, Jo was the the "face" of KOCE on countless boards, committees and community groups.

During her career, Jo was host, producer, or executive producer of eleven KOCE community specials. She was the founder and leader of the Friends of KOCE, the station's volunteer organization. Her community work associated KOCE with over 40 organizations, agencies, committees, and commissions. Notable in her achievements, Jo was the first African-American woman to be appointed to the Orange County Grand Jury in 1969. Everyone who met Jo Caines quickly grew to love her. All of us who worked with her feel this loss significantly. Jo was a beloved part of KOCE's family of staff and volunteers and will be greatly missed by all.
